XLGL Installation

February 9, 2012

With version 4.3 of XLGL, installation has been simplified and corrected in many respect. In this article I want to covert some of the changes and special issues when upgrading.

1. Uninstall previous version. This is very important. You must uninstall the previous version of XLGL before installing a new one. This can be done using the Windows Control Panel or with the Start menu (XLGL | Uninstall XLGL). This is necessary because Windows does not do a good job of replacing files for add-ins.

2. Each user must install XLGL in his/her account. XLGL does not require administrative right for installation anymore and user must install XLGL in their own account. This is necessary because the Excel XLL add-in can only be register per-user.

  • Users do not need any special permission to install
  • The XLGL add-in will only be register in the Windows account where it is installed
  • Licensing is still done by computer. Any number of users can install XLGL on a computer and still use a single license
  • Do not try to run the installation package ‘As Administrator’. This will install in the Administrator account.

3. By default, the installation folder is in the user account. There is no reason to change this, but if you do, you should still install in a location that only the current user can access. (not Program files)

4.Registration of the add-in in Excel is more solid than before. If it fails for any reason, you can force a registration from the Windows Start menu (XLGL | Register XLGL).

If this still fails, you can send files under My Documents\Add-in Express to support@logicimtech.com.

This new installation frees users  to install the software without administrator, and frees the concern for administrator of installing malicious software. It also enable user to have different version of XLGL (beta version…) under different accounts.

Please let us know if you have any installation issue not covered in this article.

XLGL and Office 64 bit

February 2, 2012

XLGL 4.3 is now available for Excel 64 bit. XLGL always worked on 64 bit computer, but Excel 64 bit could not load it. We’ve made the necessary ajustment to our architecture to solve this.

A single installation package will install on either a 32 bit or 64 bit computer, so you don’t have to worry about downloading the correct update; it’s all the same.

With this new architecture, we also made some change in how the add-ins were registered and loaded in Excel. The result is a more robust registration and less case where XLGL is not loaded properly in Excel.

Some changes need to be mentionned for those of you doing manual registration. The XLGL.XLL file does not exist anymore and is replaced with the adxloader.Logicim.XLGL.dll file. We will update the manual registration process in an upcoming post, but details can be found in the online documentation of XLGL.

Thanks to all of tested this version on 64 bit system. All your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Registering XLGL in Excel

July 29, 2009

For some reason, either after installation or later on, the XLGL menu may not appear in Excel. Actually, the add-in is not loaded at all and it becomes impossible to refresh your report. This can be caused by updates, antivirus/antispyware program and others.

Luckily, fixing this is easy. Here are the steps to take in Excel 2000-2003 and then for Excel 2007.

Excel 2000-2003

1-On the Excel menu, click on Tools, then Add-ins.

2-Mark the checkbox for XLGL and click OK.

Excel 2007

1-Click the Office button. (the big round button in the upper left)

2-Click Excel Options (at the bottom right of the window)

3-Select Add-ins in the left panel.

4-At the bottom of the window, click Go…

5-Mark the checkbox for XLGL and click OK.

In the case where XLGL would not be in the list, click on Browse… and retrieve the XLGL.XLL file from the installation folder. If you did not change it at installation, it will be:

C:\Program Files\Logicim inc.\XLGL\XLGL.XLL
